CWG 30th anniversary auction wines
Kevin Arnold and Beyers Truter were also young and pretty once upon a time – and here are photos to prove it!
Thirty years is a long time, as these (surviving) members of the Cape Winemakers Guild testify with photographs from the good old days. The Guild was founded in 1982. The pics here of Kevin Arnold (then at Delheim, now at Waterford) and Beyers Truter (then at Kanonkop, now at Beyerskloof) come from the catalogue for the second auction, in 1986 – the first was in 1985.
In those days the word “Independent” was still used, and they bothered enough about grammar to include an apostrophe: it was the Cape Independent Winemakers’ Guild. Ah well.
And of course there are now a lot more of them. That 1986 catalogue lists just Kevin Arnold (Delheim), Jannie Engelbrecht (Rust en Vrede), Jan Coetzee (Vriesenhof), Walter Finlayson (Blaauwklippen), Pieter Ferreira (Clos Cabriere), Janey Muller (Lemberg), Braam van Velden (Overgaauw), Peter Finlayson (Hamilton Russell Vineyards), Billy Hofmeyr (Welgemeend), Johan Malan (Simonsig), Neil Ellis (Zevenwacht), Etienne le Riche (Rustenberg), Kurt Amman (Rozendal), Jeff Grier (Villiera) and Beyers Truter (Kanonkop).
You won’t even find all those names, let alone all the estates they represented in those days, in the list below giving all the wines on offer at this year’s auction, to be held on 6 October.
The auction wines can be tasted by the general public in Cape Town and Johannesburg: at the CTICC in Cape Town at 18h00 on Thursday, 23 August and at 18h00 at The Atrium, Nedbank Sandton in Johannesburg on Thursday, 30 August. Tickets cost R170 and are available from www.WebTickets.co.za.

Incidentally, a small group of local wine critics, including Tim James and Angela Lloyd from Grape, will be tasting (blind) the Auction wines in advance of the auction, and will report on their impressions.

Notable too that the wine of show has been won by South Africa three of the last four years :-) The only exception being the Craggy Range Pinot that won in 2010. SA on the march!
