A fine top 20

Which are the top twenty winieries in South Africa? Well, here's one plausible list, derived from my poll of a few dozen wine professionals: sommeliers, retailers and winewriters and judges, including four critics from the largest foreign market for Cape wine.

The list, with some analysis and commentary is published in today's (Thursday 5 April) Mail & Guardian, and they have put it on their website, here.

Producers doubled?

"This is not a definitive list -- how could it be, especially when the number of producers and brands has doubled in the last decade or so alone and no one can regularly monitor them all." Tim James.

In the Rapport Hennie Duvenhage writes that the producers have gone down from 4515 in 1999 to 3596 currently. More are expected to fold soon.

My question is thus: Which is the truth?

We picked Merlot last week at approx 13.5% alc, 3.4 ph and right on 8 gr of acid. Great flavours too, the team tell me. Very bullish about 2012 at the moment.

That is a great list, being a wine lover myself I would be on top of the world if I have the chance to get to taste even 5 of these. I would share this post with some of my close friend who also happen to enjoy good wine.
